The first part of the meeting was held at the headquarters of the Kampinos National Park Directorate. The event was officially opened by the Park’s Director, Anna Wilińska. This was followed by a presentation delivered by Anna Andrzejewska, Chief Specialist for Nature Conservation, who spoke about precipitation patterns and the effects of drought in the Park.

Next, Michał Miazga, President of the REC Polska NGO, took the floor and presented the hydrotechnical measures implemented within the project, along with their observed impact on water levels.

After the presentations, participants went on a field visit to the Nowa Dąbrowa area, where selected results of the implemented measures were showcased. Journalists had the opportunity to see, among others, riffles on the Zaborowski Canal, a refurbished weir (completed under a different project), and a small pond created specifically for amphibians.

The conference provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and experience on ecosystem restoration, climate change adaptation, and drought mitigation. During the sessions, research results and examples of implementation measures from various regions of Poland were presented. As part of the field component, participants visited, among others, the site of the Narewka River restoration project, implemented over 10 years ago and considered one of the first initiatives of this kind in Poland.

The participation of the REC Polska team offered an opportunity to present the objectives and current results of the Kampinos WetLIFE project, as well as to establish new contacts and cooperation with experts and institutions engaged in water and nature conservation.

The event brought together approximately 85 participants from Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. The meeting provided a platform for networking and for exchanging knowledge and experiences among teams implementing similar initiatives across the Central and Eastern Europe region.

The programme also included presentations by representatives of the European Commission on current LIFE calls for proposals and funding priorities in the fields of environment and climate action.

An important component of the event was a series of four field visits showcasing the results of LIFE projects implemented in Warsaw and its surrounding areas, including the Kampinos WetLIFE project. This excursion attracted the greatest interest among participants.

With the arrival of spring, the first season of hydrotechnical works carried out under the Kampinos WetLIFE project has come to an end. During this period, a range of measures were implemented to improve water retention and restore natural hydrological conditions in the Kampinos National Park.

The completed works included the construction of three stone-and-gravel riffles and the installation of a flap gate at the junction of the Kacapski Canal and Ł9. In addition, the existing concrete weir in the Żurawiowe Strict Protection Area was upgraded by raising it with wooden elements. These measures have led to significantly improved moisture conditions in areas within the influence of the new structures compared to other parts of the Park and are effectively mitigating the impacts of ongoing drought.

An important component of the works was also the naturalisation of a section of the Łasica Canal between Władysławów and Bieliny. Within this stretch, several sediment traps and bypass excavations were constructed. Sediment traps are structures made using wooden stakes, brushwood, branches and soil; depending on their location, two types were applied: bank sediment traps and central sediment traps. Bypass excavations, in turn, are simple earthworks involving the creation of small inlets along the canal banks. The excavated material is then used to form shallow areas or small peninsulas nearby. These measures are intended to increase the hydromorphological diversity of the straight canal and support naturalisation processes.

The implemented actions represent an important step towards restoring natural hydrological processes in Kampinos National Park and improving habitat conditions for many species associated with wetland ecosystems.

All this was done in gratitude to the farmers of Kampinos, who for generations have shaped these meadows, creating space for storks, sandpipers, water rails, and black grouse. Thanks to them, the forest not only rustles but also teems with life.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to the residents of the forest villages, lovers of Kampinos, tireless volunteers, and the staff of Kampinos National Park. It was their hands and hearts that brought this tradition back to life, making the forest once again echo with the sounds of haymaking of old.

The event would not have been possible without Mr. Ryszard Kurek, who led the haystack building, Mr. Jacek Jerzmański, who conducted a workshop on traditional scything, and Agnieszka Gutkowska, a botanist at Kampinos National Park, who spoke passionately about the richness of meadow flora.
