Hydrotechnical works in Kampinos National Park

Work is underway to improve wetland water conditions in Kampinos National Park. At present, two riffles have been constructed in the area of the former villages of Karolinów and Pieklice. In addition, four sections of river restoration have already been completed in the Łasica Canal, with the aim of creating better habitat conditions for the plants and animals living in the canal.

Construction has started

After a long period of preparation, we are finally moving forward with the implementation of key technical measures. As part of these activities, 14 structures will be built to stabilise groundwater levels, enhance valley water flow, and protect the Krzywa Góra EIA site from the drainage of alder forests. In addition, approximately 8 km of the Łasica and Zaborowski canals will be renaturalised to make them more hospitable to fauna and flora while maintaining their function of draining excess water from inhabited areas. The work is scheduled to continue until December 2026.

New pond complexes in Kampinos National Park

In September, the construction of three additional pond complexes was completed as part of efforts to improve habitats for amphibians – the great crested newt Triturus cristatus (1166) and the fire-bellied toad Bombina bombina (1188) – as well as for invertebrates – the ram’s-horn snail Anisus vorticulus (4056), the ground beetle Graphoderus bilineatus (1082), and the large white-faced darter Leucorrhinia pectoralis (1042). Each pond complex consists of five diverse water bodies covering areas from several dozen to several hundred square metres.

Haymaking in the Forest in Granica

This year, for the first time, the Kampinos Forest Haymaking Festival in Granica was held in the Kampinos Forest – a celebration of work, tradition, and love of nature. The weather was kind to the nearly seventy participants who, armed with scythes, rakes, and pitchforks, eagerly set to work like farmers of old. The rustling of the grass mingled with the sound of scythes, the scent of hay, and the laughter of people who, through their joint effort, built not one but two fine haystacks – symbols of community and a return to the old rhythms of nature.

All this was done in gratitude to the farmers of Kampinos, who for generations have shaped these meadows, creating space for storks, sandpipers, water rails, and black grouse. Thanks to them, the forest not only rustles but also teems with life.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to the residents of the forest villages, lovers of Kampinos, tireless volunteers, and the staff of Kampinos National Park. It was their hands and hearts that brought this tradition back to life, making the forest once again echo with the sounds of haymaking of old.

The event would not have been possible without Mr. Ryszard Kurek, who led the haystack building, Mr. Jacek Jerzmański, who conducted a workshop on traditional scything, and Agnieszka Gutkowska, a botanist at Kampinos National Park, who spoke passionately about the richness of meadow flora.

REC Polska and Kampinos National Park cordially invite the residents of the Kampinos Forest area to a workshop on traditional scything and haystack building.

Join us on 6 September at 12:00 noon in the clearing next to the car park of the Educational and Museum Centre in Granica to refresh old skills and discover the traditional art of working with scythes and hay, just as it was once practised in the meadows of Kampinos.

Another complex of ponds in Kampinos National Park

On 16 July 2025, the next stage of activities aimed at strengthening amphibian populations began, focusing on species such as the common frog, common toad, smooth newt, and great crested newt. As part of this stage, three additional pond complexes will be constructed—a total of 15 reservoirs—in the central part of Kampinos National Park, in the areas of Zamość, Górki, and Nowa Dąbrowa. The completion of this stage is planned for mid-September.

Planting plants and the presence of fire-bellied toads in the pond

As part of the Kampinoskie Bagna 2 project, a complex of ponds was created to strengthen the amphibian population in Kampinos National Park. These small water bodies were established at the beginning of spring, and we are now planting aquatic and riparian vegetation in these areas. Vegetation plays a key role in the ecosystem of these ponds, providing shelter, spawning grounds, and food sources for various species. The plants introduced into the ponds include reed manna grass (Glyceria maxima), marsh marigold (Caltha palustris), comfrey (Symphytum officinale), water mint (Mentha aquatica), and water lilies (Nymphaea spp.). These species not only improve water quality and stabilise the substrate but also create favourable conditions for the development of amphibians and other aquatic organisms.

The presence of fire-bellied toads, tadpoles, and grass snakes in one of the ponds in Władysławowo is a very promising sign that the newly created ecosystem is beginning to function and attract various animal species whose life cycles are closely linked to water.

The second year of combating knotweed by netting in the KPN has begun

Knotweed is one of the most difficult invasive plants to control. In 2024, we began combating it in the Kampinos Forest using the netting method. According to the work plan, activities are scheduled to take place before knotweed begins to grow in spring. And so it happened: when the first shoots started emerging from the ground in March this year, all dry above-ground stems from the previous season were removed, the netting was secured, and it was extended to adjacent areas where the plant had started to grow beyond the existing barrier. The dry stems from last year pose no threat. Because of the early timing of the work and the presence of only a few young shoots—none exceeding 1 cm in height—the activities were completely safe. Unfortunately, the controlled populations remain viable, which is not surprising considering the biology of this plant. The effects of the applied method should become apparent after five years, and we are only at the beginning of this process.

Drought in Kampinos

This year is the first in 10 years, or perhaps even longer, when there has been so little water in the Kampinos marshes and elsewhere.

Currently, 0.35 m3 of water flows per second in Łasica, and the lowest spring flow recorded so far (the lowest, not the average or the highest!) was 1.1 m3, which is three times more than at present.

We will see what happens next, but for now, the year looks very difficult, and a continued lack of rainfall may have negative consequences not only for newts and fire-bellied toads, but also for other, more xerophilic organisms.

The data was collected by a team of hydrologists from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences as part of the ‘Kampinoskie Bagna 2’ project.

Meeting with the authors of VADEMECUM KAMPINOSKICH BAGIEN

On 22 March, there will be a meeting with the authors of VADEMECUM KAMPINOSKICH BAGIEN (Vademecum of the Kampinos Marshes) – a book about the wetlands of the Kampinos Forest and their protection.
The meeting will start at 4 p.m. in the building of the Kampinos National Park Directorate. On this occasion, we have planned two panels, discussions on wetland protection, and finally, light refreshments. Everything will take place in an informal atmosphere and a light-hearted manner.
Participants will receive free copies of the Vademecum.
