In the Kampinoskie Bagna 2 project, experts from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) are systematically collecting data on flows in the Kampinos Forest. What were the results in July? Well, the flows in the canals were 0 m³/s. Should we be concerned about this situation? To answer this question, it should be noted that the Kampinos watercourses are not rivers, but artificial canals without a constant supply. This means that they stop flowing in the summer. In this case, the lack of flow does not mean a lack of water in the environment. The Kampinos water deposits in the ground are up to several dozen metres deep, and water only flows through the canals when it exceeds a certain level. The deeper the channels, the lower this level is. The activities of beavers and renaturation measures have contributed to the fact that the water does not flow away until it falls below the level of the nearest beaver dam or sluice gate.
Zero flow in the channels in summer is not a bad thing. Although it signals drought, the more natural the Kampinos marshes are, the longer the flow in the watercourses will disappear and the more water will remain in the marshes.
