The project “Wetlands conservation and restoration in “Puszcza Kampinoska” Natura 2000 site (LIFE12/NAT/PL/000084) has finished 30.06.2019. We hope that wetlands in the Kampinos Forest will remember it for a long time! We would like to thank all the Partners, cooperating institutions, local administration and inhabitants of the area for a 6-year-long cooperation. The project Partners are working on obtaining funds for further actions aiming at conservation of wetland-dependant species that live the the Kampinos Forest.

This is the largest enterprise in Europe dedicated to environmental protection – a series of events organized by the European Commission. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices between representatives of state administration, industry, non-governmental organizations, academia and the media. This year, Green Week is taking place in Warsaw. Project partner Marshal’s Office of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship – was a co-organizer of this event this year. They were organized in the University of Warsaw Library.

During the event, the project stand was visited by students from Warsaw schools and representatives of Warsaw offices, as well as the EU Commissioner for the Environment Karmenu Veela. He listened with interest to the assumptions and effects of the project, presented to him by the members of the project team. We hope that the Kampinos National Park and its wetlands will be remembered for a long time by the participants of the Warsaw picnic.

The objects include two earth- and seven wooden dams, as well as nine fords with the damming function. The inflows and outflows of two culverts were renovated and 16 drainage ditches were rebuilt by construction of culverts with one-way lid at their inflow to the canal. This way, the water will flow from the canal to the adjusting wetlands, and will be blocked while flowing in the opposite dorection. Also some parts of channel edges have been renovated in order to stop wetlands desiccation.

The works have been formally accepted are covered by a five-year warranty. These are the last field works carried out as part of the Kampinoskie Bagna project.

The area of ​​impact of the works includes land managed by Kampinos National Park, including plots purchased during the project implementation.

After six years of experience in not only implementing hydrotechnical works, but also cooperation, communication and managing challanges, new possibilities  and ideas emerged from project successes. Project team decided to turn these ideas into plans and – here it is! The preliminary project proposal, accepted by the EC in autumn, has been developed into a new, challenging project, that continues and develops current conservation tasks on wetland areas in Kampinos Forest. We hope that it will be accepted and the new ideas will be carried out.

During the meetings, we present a miniature model of water circulation in the Park, which allows to show how dams and other hydrotechnical infrastructure influence water levels in particular project areas. There is also a workshop on making DIY “crushers” with project’s logo, which is a great attraction for children. The toys are made from expired balloons, that gives an additional benefit for promoting sustainable use of resources and upcycling. Since autumn 2018, people living in the vicinity of Kampinos National Park are also encouraged to take part in a survey, which aims to gather opinions about the perception of water in nature and a National Park as a place to live, from people living in the Park and its buffer zone. Our additional attraction is the moose, which bravely encourages guests to visit the stand, despite thick fur that is sometimes unsuited to the hot weather.

– Sunday 9th September at the EcoPicnic in the Kampinos commune

The works were undertaken between December 2016 and February 2018 and were conducted only in autumns and winters, to prevent disturbing rare animal species. Works were conducted in harsh weather conditions (with record-high rainfall in the second half of 2017), which forced additional, obligatory constructions and prolonged the investment process. Currently, all facilities are already constructed and we hope they will contribute to the improvement of the conditions of local wetlands.
